THE "FREE SCHOOLS
OF MUSIC"
• There are six (6) Escuelas Libres de Música ( Free Schools of Music) in Puerto Rico: San Juan, Arecibo, Caguas, Humacao, Ponce, and Mayagüez.
• The schools were a creation of the illustrious attorney, musician, and legislator, Ernesto Ramos Antonini in the year 1946 "to develop and channel the innate artistic sensitivity of our people through a systematic plan of teaching, learning, experimentation, dissemination, and formation in the musical arts ."
• Although some of the schools bear different names, they are all considered free schools of music since their main curriculum is musical education.
• They are all specialized schools administered by the Puerto Rico Department of Education with severely limited budgets which is why they survive with the support of parents, teachers, and private donations.
• The only one that offers a full preparatory academic program (grades 7 to 12) in addition to the musical curriculum es the Ernesto Ramos Antonini Free School of Music in San Juan.
